  • What is the SAT?

The SAT (Scholastic Assessment Test) is a standardized test widely used for college admissions in the United States, Canada, and in some universities in Europe.

The SAT is intended to measure literacy, numeracy and writing skills that are needed for academic success in college. It assesses how well you analyze and solve problems. The test is administered under a tight time limit (speeded) to help produce a range of scores.

  • Structure of the Test:

The SAT consists of four tests, divided into two sections: Reading, Writing and Language, for English; Mathematics (no calculator) and Mathematics (calculator allowed). A fifth test is optional, which consists of writing an essay on a proposed topic. The duration of the SAT is three hours; three hours and fifty minutes with the optional test.

Each section is evaluated with a score ranging from 200 to 800 points for correct answers (all scores are multiples of ten). The total score is calculated by adding the results of the four tests. The optional essay is evaluated separately.

  • Calculator use:

For the math test with the calculator, all scientific calculators and four-function calculators (not recommended) are allowed. Calculators of mobile phones, smartphones, typewriter-like keyboards (QWERTY), laptops and other portable computers and calculators that can access the Internet are not allowed.

  • Style of questions:

The exam questions concern:

  • Critical reading: reading and understanding of multiple passages and multiple-choice tests;

  • Writing and language: multiple-choice test to be performed in 35 minutes

  • Mathematics: multiple-choice tests (78%); troubleshooting (22%).

For each correct answer, one raw point is added; no points are deducted for incorrect answers.

The SAT is offered outside the United States, in the main Italian cities, four times a year: in October, December, March and May. Check the exact dates on the IST website ( Registration for the exam must be completed online by the candidate for at least one month before the day of the test, by connecting to the site
