Florida State University (FSU)
The Florida State University Florence Program was founded in 1966 and is one of the oldest American programs in Italy. That year Florence suffered one of its most tragic natural catastrophes, the great flood of the Arno River, which damaged hundreds of thousands of historic manuscripts and works of art. Even in its first year of operation, FSU demonstrated a commitment to its host city when students volunteered to help dig the city out from under the mud and debris left behind. Those students became known as the Mud Angels and their example set in stone FSU Florence’s commitment to giving back to its community through volunteerism, becoming the foundational stone of the program’s identity for generations of students. When students study in Florence with Florida State, they don’t just find a study abroad program, they find a family of welcoming faculty and staff who employ their expertise guiding them through the experience of exploring a new culture.
Students who join the program take their courses in the historic Palazzo Bagnesi, the brand-new FSU Florence Study Center. The Palazzo, which has just been completely renovated to combine renaissance architectural context with state-of-the-art technology, is equipped with facilities for a multitude of courses such as cooking classes, fashion design, broadcast and print journalism, and tutoring lab. FSU Florence’s academic philosophy is based upon experiential learning in intimate lecture environments. Therefore, students experience the city as their classroom, gaining first-hand experience practicing the Italian language, visiting historical sites, purchasing food from local markets, or becoming apprentices for the day with Florentine artisans.
Highlights of the Florence Program include two long-weekend excursions and one day trip every semester. Destinations may include Rome, the Amalfi Coast, Siena, Urbino, and Venice. These experiences allow students to explore Italy beyond the city of Florence. To delve into local food and drink production, every semester students also take a trip to an organic farm near Florence to learn about the process of making wine and olive oil. At lunch winemakers teach students about the secrets of wine pairing. By the end of the semester or school year, students are prepared academically, culturally, and professionally to take on the rigors of the home campus and life beyond college.
Taking first-year courses abroad prepares students entry their major-specific courses once they move to the Home Campus in Tallahassee, FL as sophomores. Because they spent their First Year Abroad (FYA), students benefit from Florida In-State Tuition for the next three years. The discount on tuition, which amounts to about $42,000, applies to all FYA students regardless of their nationalities. The FSU Florence Study Center is one of four Florida State branch campuses which offers the FYA Program. Students may also choose Valencia, London, or Panama City, Panama.
